The recent Stanford Social Innovation Review article on Climate Change reports that recent studies graphically show "The public debate around climate change is no longer about science--it is about values, culture, and ideology."
It is probably no surprise that in this context, the culture divide on climate change issues is also the political party divide. With Republicans and Democrats hopelessly involved in a deadly either/or stalemate on irrelevant issues in the face of this challenge, it is up to us voters to search and find leaders who are prepared to think outside this little box and in longer time frames than the next election cycle.
The survival of our species depends on the actions that will be taken in the next 10-15 years, or less. Every debate and every discussion needs to have as its focus and baseline, solutions that clearly and significantly deal with climate change. This discussion, of course, involves focusing on green products, green jobs, a green economy and a whole new mind-set based on what will enable our species to continue to live and enjoy the immense gifts of our planet for generations to come, not just to the next election!
Republicans and Democrats, it is time to acknowledge the elephant (and the donkey) in the room. The discussion can no longer be an either/or dialogue, but must quickly evolve into an AND discussion to be at all relevant in the context of our the new climate changing world.
The GREEN UMP says, "Be SAFE, make YOUR voice heard loud and clear in the next few months, and it will happen!" Be silent and YOU ARE OUT--bigtime!
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead
